Child and Adolescent Therapy

Therapy or counseling can help support a child or adolescent through a variety of challenges from dealing with depression and anxiety to supporting better executive functioning.

Counseling can help children for a variety of concerns. Symptoms of depression or anxiety, difficulty at school or home, or just to get through a difficult time, are just a few things that may lead you to seek therapy for your child. Sometimes we need someone to help our children through challenges and it is natural to seek support.

Kids benefit from therapy when they are dealing with problems that they cannot handle on their own. Sometimes these problems affect how well they do, feel, or act. If things are not getting better by themselves, therapy can be used to help work with the challenge and help improve things.

Therapy for children involves talking, doing, and playing. Counseling looks different for different people, which is why I keep up with all relevant treatment approaches for a variety of issues. Some concerns that often show up in my practice include:

Dealing with feelings like:

  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Stress
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Grief

Dealing with children and adolescents with conditions like:

  • Panic & OCD
  • ADHD and ADD issues
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Depression
  • Social anxiety & difficulty with social skills
  • Autism and Asperger’s symptoms

Therapy begins with an initial diagnostic interview with the parent and child. Sometimes this occurs together and other times it is more appropriate for them to happen separately. Please contact me if you think therapy might be the right next step for your child.
